USS INDIANAPOLIS SURVIVOR
Mike Kuryla at 2007 Reading Air Show in Pennsylvania. Almost 1,200 men were aboard the heavy cruiser when a Japanese submarine sank it in the Philippine Sea on July 30, 1945. This was just days after the ship had delivered the Hiroshima atom bomb to the island of Tinian. The Indianapolis went down in 12 minutes. Mike was one of 317 men who survived after three nights and four days in the shark-infested waters. He died in 2009, age 84.
