St. John's Episcopal Church on the Pine Ridge Reservation in Oglala, SD. It was originally miles to the south in Pine Ridge, where four days after Christmas in 1890 it became an emergency shelter for Sioux casualties, mostly women and children., from the Wounded Knee massacre, the last major conflict of the U.S. war with the Plains Indians. The scene is movingly described in the concluding paragraphs of Dee Brown's "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee."
