It is one of the better preserved western ghost towns. Elkhorn had its heyday in the 1880s and 90s, when it flourished on silver and gold mining.

This former open pit copper mine in Butte, Montana, is filled to a depth of about 900 feet with very acidic water that is laden with heavy metals and other dangerous chemicals. In 1995 a flock of migrating snow geese landed on the water and perished.
